The National (UAE): City Gazing Dubai
The National, the UAE's leading English-language daily newspaper, featured City Gazing Dubai in their arts and culture coverage during the installation's debut at DIFC Gate Avenue. Writer Evelyn Lau captured the essence of our site-specific light art installation, describing how the 18x11-meter LED artwork suspended eight meters above the financial district transformed Dubai's urban development story into a mesmerizing "multisensory journey."
The article beautifully conveyed the installation's core message about the "overview effect" - that profound shift in perspective astronauts experience when viewing Earth from space. As Mingus noted in the piece: "City Gazing Dubai gives people the chance to experience the 'overview effect'... It's an awareness that life on Earth is fragile and that we are all connected."
Running from December 2021 through January 2022, City Gazing Dubai showcased the emirate's remarkable transformation from desert outpost to global metropolis, all while encouraging viewers to consider themes of human achievement, sustainability, and our collective responsibility to the planet. The National's coverage helped introduce our slowtech philosophy to UAE audiences, emphasizing how technology can serve to unite rather than isolate us in our increasingly connected world.
